Pochi artisti della scena rock'n'roll possono ostentare senza timore il proprio nome e gestirlo come unica e preziosa icona di un genere cui sono indiscussi protagonisti. SLASH è uno di questi artisti.

Chitarrista in grado di acquisire rispetto e ammirazione senza pari, SLASH è da anni punto di riferimento per ogni amante delle sei corde e musicista in grado di incontrare il favore e l'amicizia dei molti colleghi con cui si è trovato a collaborare durante la lunga e prolifica carriera. Non sorprende, dunque, che al momento di rispondere alla chiamato per il proprio disco solista, numerosi amici e compagni abbiano accettato con entusiasmo la sfida. Ozzy Osbourne, Iggi Pop, Kid Rock, Dave Grohl e Fergie non si sono certo tirati indietro... e "Slash" è giunto finalmente a compimento.

"Slash" è il primo disco solista di SLASH, frutto di un anno trascorso nello studio di Hollywood con il produttore Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, The All-American Rejects, Nickel Creek), il bassista Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) e il batterista Josh Freese (recentemente con Nine Inch Nails).

Ad accompagnare SLASH in questa nuova avventura, troviamo alcuni degli artisti più importanti e influenti del panorama internazionale. Ian Astbury, Lemmy Killmeister, Chris Cornell, Duff McKagan, Adam Levine (Maroon Five), Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge), Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother), M Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold) e Rocco De Luca.

I brani contyenuti in "Slash" coprono numerosi argomenti. "Ghost", con Astbury, apre le danze guidata da cupe e suadenti note, “Beautiful Dangerous” (Fergie) e “I Hold On” (Kid Rock) portano il rock'n'roll a nuovo e più alto livello, mentre la strumentale "Watch This" mostra in tutto il suo splendore il trio SLASH/McKagan/Grohl. "Crucify the Dead” (Ozzy), "Doctor Alibi” (Lemmy) e “We’re All Gonna Die” (Iggy) si fanno forti delle indiscusse personalità dei propri interpreti, mentre la romantica "Gotten" (Levine) e la mistica "Saint Is A Sinner Too" (De Luca) offrono forti contrasti e profonde ombre personali.

“It was an honor to have all of these guys in here”, confessa SLASH. “A few of them are heroes of mine from when I was younger. Lemmy was definitely one of the main ones for me growing up. Ozzy and Iggy and Lemmy. They all came to have a good time, but I was impressed that they were all really conscientious about doing a good job”.

Fin dalla sua consacrazione qualie icona del rock, legata ai Guns N' Roses, SLASH si è saputo distinguere tra i migliori chitarristi del mondo. Interpreti di tutto rispetto guardano oggi al chitarrista come importante punto di riferimento. Da Michael Jackson (“Black and White”, “Give In to Me”) a Ray Charles e Stevie Wonder, fino ai registi Quentin Tarantino e Darren Aronofsky (con le colonne sonore di “Jackie Brown” e “The Wrestler”), tutti hanno apprezzato e attinto dall'esperienza e dalle doti di SLASH, considerato da Time Magazine secondo solo a Jimi Hendrix.

Consapevole di quanto ottenuto e dell'ammirazione suscitata, il chitarrista riesce a mantenere la propria umiltà. “It would take somebody else to tell you that. I’m just not that guy. I mean, I like to think that I’m sort of carrying on the tradition of stuff that turned me on as a kid. And I think I’m sort of doing it some justice".

Sebbene protagonista di una miriade di pubblicazioni, questo è il primo vero lavoro solista di SLASH. "Slash" è ricco di energia, musicalità e soluzioni uniche e in grado di mostrare tutta l'abilità dell'autore.

“There’s obviously a sort of musical coherence to it”, commenta SLASH. “A lot of variety on the record, shifts in mood. But there is that underlying … uh … Slashiness”. 

Dopo il Libarted Tour con i Velvet Revolver, SLASH ha avvertito la necessità di creare qualcosa di unico e personale, slegato da ogni altro progetto. Il chitarrista ha così iniziato a scrivere, suonare e provare, registrando tutto quanto necessario, fino a chiudere tutte le sezioni strumentali poi inserite in "Slash".

Il passo successivo è stato interpellare alcuni dei più famosi e abili cantanti, primo fra tutti: Iggy Pop.

“He sort of set the pace, set the vibe for the whole record. And actually it went really seamless from that point on". Ricorda SLASH. "Iggy came in, did the vocal and flew back to Florida. He was here for two days. And then the next guy and the next guy. Just fucking amazing how something so complex in nature, having to do with the logistics of it all, could be on an artistic level so simple and creative and flowed so well”.

“Chris, Josh and I would come in here to track a song and we’d listen to the demo, they’d hear it for the first time in the afternoon and we’d jam it out with the master of ceremonies Eric Valentine tying it all together and then we’d lay the track that night. And then the next day the vocalist would come in. We did that pretty much like clockwork, from May to June. By July we had an almost finished record”.

L'intero disco è stato registrato in analogico, per meglio enfatizzare la spontaneità e l'umanità degli interpreti. Il progetto ha inoltre accompagnato lo sviluppo della colonna sonora del fim indipendente "This Is Not A Movie", del regista messicano Ollalo Rubio: ennesiam prima volta per SLASH.

“The Ozzie song, the Fergie song and the Iggy Pop song all involve ideas for music I used in the score”, continua il chitarrista. “And I wrote strong arrangements for the Adam Levine song ‘Gotten,’ which is the first time I had done that, though I had done some keyboard string arrangements for the movie”.

Dopo aver venduto oltre 100 milioni di album con i Guns N' Roses e aver dominato l'industria musicale con "Appetite For destruction", SLASH ha firmato i successi globali di Snakepit e Velvet Revolver, fino a divenire protagonista indiscusso non solo in ambito musicale.

"Slash" è solo una parte di ciò che l'autore ha realizzato e sta portando avanti: un progetto ben più ampio e importante che trova qui una delle sue massime espressioni.
